1.0 INTRODUCtion

This process describes the methodology to be followed when doing software testing. The following will describe what must go into a test plan and report. The Quality Plan indicates when this process is to be followed.

  1. Purpose

Identify the products to be tested and what the test plan intends to accomplish. Such as how many tests will be run, how many must pass successfully and how the failed tests will be tracked.

  1. Test Limitations

Identify all test limitations within the scope stated in the previous section. State the reason for each limitation, the associated risk, and how the test limitation will be addressed.

  1. Test Coverage

Provide a coverage matrix for the tests to be performed that includes all testable items the test should address. List and number each testable item for cross-referencing the specific tests described in the Test Descriptions chapter. Provide testable items detail down to the level necessary to show compliance with the reference documents for the test, and to show adequate test coverage.

  1. Test Descriptions

This section provides a description of how each test in the run set is to be performed, including the pass/fail criteria. The descriptions must be detailed enough to allow any required test programs, scripts, files, databases, etc. to be developed, to provide sufficient direction for test execution, and to show theat the test coverage is sufficient.

  1. Test summary and Conclusions

Provide a summary of the tests run. Include the number of tests that the test plan defined to be run, the number of tests that ran successfully, the number of failed tests and the number of tests re-run. Discuss whether the problems found were new problems or regressions. Indicate how well the tests met the quality criteria as specified in the purpose section of the test plan. Identify any risks with proceeding and provide a recommendation regarding this decision.

  1. Summary of Problems

Summarize major problems or categories of problems found. If desired, use separate sections to list problems which have been resolved, and problems which are still outstanding.

  1. Test Results

Describe the summary results and how they compare to the success criteria. Indicate whether the success criteria has been met and what the recommendation are being made. Describe the results obtained for each test run. Include the test identifier, standard end dates of execution, test status, number of problems found while running the test, number of problems in the test which have not been resolved and how they will be tracked..
